Man brought down from downtown Winnipeg building as darkness falls

Firefighters wearing gear for climbing and police filled an alley between the Bank of Montreal and the Bell MTS building on Monday afternoon after a man was spotted on the side of a building.

A security guard noticed the man on a fire escape on the side of the Bell MTS building around noon.

According to a Bell MTS spokesperson, he jumped from a fire escape and started to climb the building, refusing to come down from his location perched on the side of a building about two storeys off the ground.

At around 9 p.m., police told media gathered around the building that the man was no longer up there.

On Monday afternoon, police said they didn't have details about how the man was able to climb the building.

"We've also got people out there trying to talk to him and make sure he comes down safely," said police spokesman Const. Rob Carver.

"But we'll take as long as we need to make sure that it ends safely."

About four fire trucks, an ambulance, police squad cars and the tactical unit were parked around the bank and the Bell MTS buildings just east of the busy intersection of Portage and Main for hours.

There was no disruption to traffic or operations of either company.
