The buzzy Spanish-language musical drama Emilia Pérez is finally out on Netflix.
The story follows Rita (Zoe Saldaña), a lawyer who sets out to help a Mexican cartel leader (Karla Sofía Gascón) fake their death and undergo gender-affirming surgery, and to begin life under a new name: Emilia Pérez. Selena Gomez also stars as Emilia's wife, Jessi.
"The idea came to me through a book called Écoute [Listen]," director Jacques Audiard explained. "Halfway through, there is a character who is a drug kingpin who wants to transition to become a woman. The author, who is a friend of mine, did not develop this character. I asked for the right to expand the character myself."
Gascón describes the film as "an action movie that’s not an action movie, a drama that’s not a drama, a comedy that’s not a comedy," and it's already earning critical acclaim—and early Oscar buzz.
The three stars collectively won Best Actress at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, after the film received a nine minute standing ovation from the crowd. As juror Lily Gladstone, said, “We decided that, how can you award a harmony by singling out individual notes? They’re stronger when they resound together, so we decided this year to award Best Actresses.”
After a limited release in theaters, Emilia Pérez is now streaming on Netflix, as of November 13.
