Succession has been named as the Best Drama Series in the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards.

The show beat off competition from Better Call Saul, The Crown, The Handmaid's Tale, Killing Eve, The Mandalorian, Ozark and Stranger Things to win the award.

As creator Jesse Armstrong accepted the prize, he said: “Thank you very much indeed, this is such a very nice moment and I’m very sad not to be with the cast and crew to share it with you all tonight.”

Because he couldn’t thank his colleagues in person, Armstrong decided to give “unthankyous” to numerous things and people. He added: “Unthankyou to the virus, unthankyou to Trump for his crummy and uncoordinated response, unthankyou to Boris and his government for doing the same in this country, unthankyou to nationalist leaders around the world and unthankyou to media moguls who keep them in power.”

This year’s proceedings took place virtually for the first time in the award show’s 72-year history.
