Employee killed by polar bears at remote worksite off Baffin Island, company says

A worker with a logistics company that operates the North Warning System in Nunavut has died after being attacked by two polar bears on Thursday.

In a news release Friday, Nasittuq Corporation said an incident occurred at one of its locations on Brevoort Island, off the eastern coast of Baffin Island.

"An attack by two polar bears has resulted in the loss of one of our valued employees," the release said.

Nasittuq employees responded after the attack and one of the animals was killed.

The company said it is not releasing the name of the person who died.

It also said it's providing support to the victim's family and that counselling services were available to employees.
