End of PC dynasty chance to reform government, Brian Jean says

The Wildrose Party is proposing a number of reforms to how Alberta is governed in the post-Progressive Conservative party era which include giving opposition MLAs more power.

The proposals include expanding private member business, introducing opposition days in the legislature and mandate a time period for the government to respond to written questions from MLAs.

The end of the 44-year PC dynasty on May 5 means Albertans expect the government to clean up its act, Wildrose Leader Brian Jean said.

He challenged Premier Rachel Notley and the new NDP government to step up.

"Now's the time to walk the walk and walk the talk," Jean said Friday. "So let's see what they can do."

The Wildrose also wants to end government "super majorities" on MLA committees and set fixed dates for sessions of the legislature.

The NDP government also plans to enact democratic reforms which could include a ban on political donations by corporations and unions.
