An English couple were stopped by Welsh police after driving to “see the sunrise” at Mount Snowdon on Christmas Day.

Officers told a man and woman to return home after pulling their car over on the A5 between Betws-Y-Coed and Capel Curig on Friday morning.

The couple, who were from a Tier 3 area of the UK, were reported for a summons for breaking coronavirus rules and ordered to return home.

Wales is currently under the strictest Tier 4 regulations and the public are expected to stay at home and not travel without a reasonable excuse.

North Wales Police said in a Facebook statement: “This morning PC3168 Coburn based at Llanrwst Police Station stopped a car on the A5 between Betws-Y-Coed and Capel Curig and found the two occupants were from a tier 3 area of the UK.

“They informed the officer they had travelled to North Wales to climb Snowdon to see the sunrise.

“They were advised accordingly to return home after being reported for summons by the officer for breaching Coronavirus Wales Legislation.”

North Wales Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Nigel Harrison added: "We will continue to police in a sensible, proportionate and fair manner, and ask that everyone continues to take personal responsibility for controlling the spread of the virus and protecting themselves and others from harm.

“In most situations, we resolve breaches without having to issue a fine.

“Where people refuse to listen and comply – and are putting everyone at risk – we will take robust enforcement action.”

Exemptions to the “stay at home” message that applied in the November lockdown also apply in the new Tier 4 – including support bubbles, childcare bubbles and children whose parents are separated.

People are allowed to travel for education, for childcare and to go to work if they cannot work from home, and they will be permitted unlimited outdoor exercise.

The restrictions were relaxed in Wales for Christmas Day, when the public were permitted to travel to mix with one other household.
