Enjoy the relatively warm weekend before an arctic cold front hits Fort Worth next week

Fort Worth will warm up leading into the weekend, then will see possibly freezing rain by Tuesday and Wednesday next week, according to a National Weather Service forecast.

A strong arctic cold front will roll in Saturday night with gusty north winds and some thunderstorms, the NWS says.

“The potential for winter weather will begin to increase into the early to middle part of next week as a series of upper disturbances move across the area,” according to a NWS winter advisory. “There will be a chance for a wintry mix, including freezing rain... with some ice and snow accumulations possible.”

This wintry mix of freezing rain and snow may not come down as far southeast as the Metroplex, said Miles Langfeld, meteorologist at NWS’ Fort Worth office. There is a much better chance of the wintry weather to hit northwest of Fort Worth.

The wintry weather system for next week looks similar to the system that landed in North Texas earlier this week, which caused rain and light snow in a few cities, Langfeld said. However, the weather system is still several days out and things could change as next week gets closer.

“Again, we’re highlighting that there could be some wintry weather somewhere in the region, but as of now that potential looks to be more northwest of the DFW Metroplex,” Langfeld said.

The rest of this week will see highs in the mid-50s to low 60 degrees Thursday and Friday, Langfeld said.

Rain chances will return this weekend, with a 20% chance Saturday and temperatures in the mid-60s. By Sunday, temperatures will drop to the low 60s and high 50s, Langfeld said. By Wednesday, the highs will be in the low 40s.
