Equipment fault to blame for evening power outage in Whitehorse

A Yukon power utility is blaming an equipment fault for a power outage that plunged downtown Whitehorse into darkness Wednesday night.

About 1,600 people lost power around 5:50 p.m., in the areas of Front Street to 6th Avenue; 2nd Avenue in front of Superstore to the S.S. Klondike.

According to ATCO Electric Yukon, the cause was an equipment fault at the Shipyards substation downtown. The reason for the fault is not known, but an investigation will continue today.

Power was restored throughout the evening, with everyone back on by 7:17 p.m.
