Ethel Kennedy is Laid to Rest in Arlington National Cemetery

Today, Ethel Kennedy was buried in Arlington National Cemetery alongside her husband, the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

"Today, Mummy was laid to rest next to Daddy at Arlington National Cemetery. Her extraordinary life and enduring legacy will continue to guide and inspire us," wrote Ethel and Bobby's daughter Kerry Kennedy on social media. "We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this time."

Ethel passed away earlier this year at the age of 96 after suffering from a stroke.

"It is with our hearts full of love that we announce the passing of our amazing grandmother, Ethel Kennedy. She died this morning from complications related to a stroke suffered last week," read a family statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) by her grandson Joe Kennedy III. "Along with a lifetime’s work in social justice and human rights, our mother leaves behind nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom love her dearly."

In recent months, Ethel's children have publicly feuded, as several of them spoke out first against their brother Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s presidential campaign and later his endorsement of President-elect Donald Trump, but today, they put their differences aside to pay tribute to their mother.

This service marks the third memorial for the Kennedy family matriarch. One week after her passing, her family gathered on Cape Cod for a funeral mass at Our Lady of Victory, in Centerville, Massachusetts, a fitting send off for a devout Catholic.

Then, she was eulogized with a service in Washington, D.C. at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle at which President Joe Biden spoke.

"For over 50 years, with Ethel's own iron will and moral courage, she gave it everything she had," he said. "We're a better nation and a better world because of Ethel Kennedy." Former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton also paid their respects, as did Martin Luther King III.

Today marks a third and final tribute, and perhaps fittingly, Ethel's burial took place on the anniversary of President Kennedy's own funeral; he was laid to rest on November 25, 1963. Ethel and Robert's gravesite is right next to that of President Kennedy, his wife Jackie, and two of their children, Patrick and Arabella.
