The European Broadcasting Union made this decision following the victory of the Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra in the 2022 contest amid the ongoing Russian war against Ukraine.

The award was bestowed upon the BBC Studios / BBC One team, responsible for the contest production. The Ukrainian team was involved in the production.

The show in Liverpool was conducted on behalf of Ukraine, featuring Ukrainian artists and crew, with Herman Nenov directing interval acts. One of the three hosts was Ukrainian singer Yulia Sanina, frontwoman of The Hardkiss.
