Evacuation orders in El Dorado County after Crozier Fire starts overnight north of Placerville

A wildfire burning northeast of Placerville has prompted evacuation orders for some residents in El Dorado County after the blaze started early Wednesday.

The Crozier Fire started about 1:20 a.m. and had burned 67 acres northwest of Slate Mountain, according to Cal Fire.

Shortly before 8 a.m., the Cal Fire Amador-El Dorado Unit said fire crews were working on making access to the wildfire. They cautioned area residents evacuating with large vehicles and animals to be aware of firefighting vehicles and crews entering the area.

The fire had grown in size to 245 acres just after 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. Cal Fire announced firefighters had 5% of the wildfire contained.

Cal Fire was in unified command with U.S. Forest Service officials from El Dorado National Forest as they battled the wildfire.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office issued a mandatory evacuation order for the neighborhoods that are north and northeast from the Mosquito Airport to the fire line.

The Sheriff’s Office issued an evacuation warning areas north to Quintet and south of the evacuation order zone. The evacuation warning zones were later extended to the east along Highway 193 and to the north along Wentworth Springs Road.

Shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office announced that it had extended the evacuation warning zones to include the community of Volcanoville.

Sheriff’s officials asked residents to visit perimetermap.com to view the evacuation map.

For those displaced by the evacuation order, there is a temporary evacuation center at the Placerville Library at 345 Fair Lane in Placerville.

The El Dorado County Animal Services Shelter, 6435 Capitol Ave. in Diamond Springs will be open to house animals displaced by the evacuation order. If no one answers the door, please call 530-621-5795, sheriff’s officials said.

El Dorado County officials said the Placerville Library was a temporary evacuation center, where displaced residents can regroup, get some water and snacks and determine their next steps. The evacuation center allows pets on a leash or in kennels. The county officials emphasized that the library is not an overnight shelter.
