Calian Group Ltd. will undertake the work to develop Electoral Area B’s evacuation route plan.
The Regional District of Nanaimo awarded the tender to the Canadian corporation’s emergency management solutions team.
According to the request for proposals, the plan will identify evacuation routes and capacity including road networks, emergency parking locations, ferry capacity, ferry queuing and alternate evacuation options; transportation methods at different times of the year and days; evacuation zones and assembly areas and resources needed for evacuation including for vulnerable populations and animals such as livestock.
The completed plan will have photos, maps and geographic information systems (GIS) data and will follow Emergency Management BC’s provincial evacuation operational guidelines.
Some of the stakeholders who will be part of the process are BC Ambulance Services, the Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department, the RCMP, Islands Trust, BC Ferries, Mudge Citizens Society and search and rescue groups. Daniel Pearce, the RDN’s general manager for transportation and emergency services, said there are no plans at this time for general community engagement; however, individuals can post questions to the RDN Get Involved website under the topic Gabriola Evacuation Route Planning.
Earlier this year, the RDN received a $25,000 grant from the B.C. government to develop the plan. The deadline to complete it is Feb. 18, 2022.
