Evelyn Grove Manor evacuated after pipe burst, 80 seniors forced out

Fredericton's Evelyn Grove Manor was evacuated on Thursday afternoon, which forced more than 80 seniors out of their homes.

A large water pipe burst around 3 p.m. forcing staff at the seven-storey complex to cut the power as a precaution.

Fire, ambulance and Red Cross crews assisted in the evacuation.

"Everyone is fine," said Jeff Mills, platoon captain with the Fredericton Fire Department.

"There's been no injuries. We have to move because of the power issue."

Without electricity for air-conditioning, lights, or medical equipment, seniors had to spend the night out for their homes.

City transit was used to bus residents to St Dunstan's Catholic Church in Fredericton's downtown.

"There we had Red Cross, and EMT's looking after them," said Mills.

"Arrangements were made there for anyone that needed a place to stay. They either went home with family or Red Cross helped them get a hotel room if they needed it."

Leah Fitzgerald, a spokesperson with the Department for Social Development, said there is no clear timeline for when residents will be able to return home.
