Everything You Need to Know About Regina King’s V Secretive Relationship History
Not to state the obvious, but Watchmen star and 2022 Met Gala cochair Regina King is an absolute legend. (I mean, you don’t earn an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a whopping four Emmys for no reason.) And while her red carpet looks are always 💯, you may be wondering why Regina’s husband is never photographed on her arm. The reason: She doesn’t have one—not at the moment, anyway. Although she was previously married, the actor hasn’t publicly been linked to anyone since 2013.
Back in 2019, Regina told the New York Post that she’s simply too busy to be in a full-blown relationship, although she does occasionally date. “People say, ‘You’re not dating anyone?’” she said. “I mean, I’m dating, but it’s very comfortable where I am right now. Disrupting that means being in an uncomfortable place, and I’m not ready for that.” Ahead, everything we do know about Regina’s secretive relationship history, including what went down with her ex-husband.
Ian Alexander: 1994 to 2007
Regina’s longest and most public relationship was with her ex-husband, record producer Ian Alexander. The two met in the early 1990s, and after a few years of dating, they welcomed their first and only child together, Ian Jr., in 1996. The following year, they tied the knot, but in 2007, they decided to call it quits after nearly a decade of marriage.
As Regina later explained in a 2020 essay, which appeared in Essence, she and Ian worked much better as co-parents and friends than as husband and wife. “It’s kind of crazy to think that I’ve now been divorced longer than I was married,” she wrote, “but I appreciate the journey, because it brought my ex and I back to a friendship that helped us become great co-parents.”
Sadly, Ian Jr. died in January 2022. It’s unclear where Regina and Ian Sr. stand after the death of their son, but here’s hoping they’re still able to lean on each other for support.
Malcolm-Jamal Warner: 2011 to 2013
After divorcing Ian (and sparking *very* short-lived dating rumors with former NBA player Quentin Richardson and actor Nicholas Gonzalez), Regina found love again with Cosby Show alum Malcolm-Jamal Warner. The two had been friends since the 1980s when they were both child stars, but things turned romantic in 2011. “I believe the universe has a plan, and we probably wouldn’t have been ready years ago,” Regina told Parade when asked about the relationship. “We both had to do whatever we had to do to be ready for each other now.”
Sadly, the romance didn’t last, and breakup rumors stared circulating in March 2013 after the two had been dating for just about two years. “He said he wasn’t feeling it anymore,” a source told Us Weekly…and although Regina didn’t comment on the rumors at the time, it sounds like Malcolm may have broken up with her in a not-so-great way.
During a 2015 interview with Us Weekly, Regina was asked about the best Valentine’s Day present she’d ever received, to which she replied, “That’s tough because I don’t have one—someone broke up with me on Valentine’s.” Um?? According to her, that ex even sent her flowers that said, “I still love you,” and although she didn’t name names, it def seems like Malcolm is the ex in question.
Later on that same year, Malcolm congratulated Regina on her historic Emmy win for her role in American Crime, tweeting, “Thank u 4 representing & affirming that integrity dignity & success CAN coexist!” So…guess he doesn’t have any hard feelings?
Whether she remains single or not, we know Regina is going to continue thriving, both onscreen and off.
