The third season of Umbrella Academy came out during summer 2022 on Netflix, and as soon as it was released, fans were already wondering if there will be a fourth season. No fear: Netflix announced that The Umbrella Academy is renewed, and will be returning for a fourth season—but that it would be the final chapter.

Here's everything we know so far about season four of The Umbrella Academy.

Series creator Steve Blackman planned for four seasons.

Before the renewal was announced, Blackman would like to wrap up the saga in a fourth and final season. As Blackman told the Hollywood Reporter, "When I started this thing, I sort of knew four seasons of the show. I have nothing passed that in my brain, but I’ve sort of kept to a trajectory. So, I have a really good sense of what season four would be, and it should be just as bonkers as the other seasons—what a challenge these superheroes, this family has being powerless."

The Umbrella Academy creator also told TheWrap. "My plan for next year is not to continually tread on the same ground we have before. It’s a challenge to come up with a new way to subvert this storyline, and I think we have an idea how to do that. But I think if we got to season four, it would be a great ending for the run of the show. I’m not saying I couldn’t do more, but you know, I think that would be very satisfying for the audience, four seasons."

Netflix said entire Hargreeves family will return for the final season.

Elliot Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H. Min, Ritu Arya, and Colm Feore will all be reprising their roles in season four.

"It’s definitely bittersweet," Raver-Lampman told Screen Rant of the final season. "I think we all feel very blessed and very lucky that we are going into the fourth season knowing it's the end because a lot of shows don't get that opportunity. And we get to close out this chapter and these characters’ stories with a proper ending that they deserve and that the fans deserve."

In February 2023, the cast returned to begin production:

Variety reported three new faces will be joining the final season's cast. Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally will star as Drs. Gene and Jean Thibedeau, described as "a married pair of community college professors from New Mexico who wear sensible footwear and suffer from the most extreme case of deja vu this timeline has ever seen." In addition, David Cross will play Sy Grossman, "an upstanding, shy business owner and family man desperate to reconnect with his estranged daughter, who will stop at nothing to get her back."

The Netflix show is based on a comic series written by My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá.

Season three followed the Umbrella Academy as they returned to the present from 1963, where they are confronted with the Sparrow Academy and an unidentified destructive entity wreaking havoc in the universe. The season ends with a major cliffhanger—where the crew lost their powers and a few members of their family.
