Glass skin is the latest trend to take over the beauty scene. The viral trend, which has earned more than 20 million views on TikTok, has beauty lovers everywhere striving to achieve the look of "poreless" skin.

If you’ve ever wondered how celebrities get the coveted glass skin look, it requires a talented makeup artist rather than having flawless skin to begin with. But is it even possible to achieve the look of poreless skin? I asked an expert to find out.

What is the glass skin trend?

The concept of glass skin originated as a K-Beauty trend and signifies your skin being in its healthiest state. Also known as “bouncy skin” or “clear skin,” it refers to having luminous, poreless skin that seems to retain a translucent glow and appearance, mimicking the look of glass.

According to the K-Beauty trend, in order to achieve the look of glass skin, it’s important to start from the inside and work your way out. As a result, daily commitment to an effective skincare regimen in addition to maintaining a healthy, balanced lifestyle will help contribute to your skin looking and feeling its best over time, allowing you to ultimately achieve the look of "glass skin."

While a healthy lifestyle can get you so far, makeup is the other half of the glass skin equation.

One TikToker named Amelia Singson Kemp went viral for her take on the popular TikTok trend that uses guidance from Savannah Rae Collins.

Drawing inspiration from Collins's video, Singson first applied a hydrating primer to prep her skin for a flawless face. Applying a generous amount of any hydrating primer you have on hand will do, because the goal is to ensure your skin is plump and glowy to allow for a silky smooth canvas.

Singson opted for the Mecca Cosmetica Weekend Skin Glow Serum as her base. If you can’t get your hands on the Mecca Cosmetica Glow Serum, Collins's original video also recommends using the Becca Backlight Priming Filter.

After applying her base, Singson then moved onto the second step of the routine, which includes dotting Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter all over the face.

Collins's original video called the Flawless Filter a product celebrity makeup artists swear by because it’s a complexion booster that gives your skin a real-life filter effect. Thanks to its unique blend of porcelain flower extract, glossy oil and finely milled powder, it blurs, smooths and provides a radiant finish.

Before blending in the Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter, the final step involves dotting some of your favourite skin tint all over the face.

A skin tint is a foundation base that hydrates your skin and allows it to breathe because it doesn’t clog your pores. As a result, it feels super lightweight on the skin and helps to even out your skin tone by providing minimal coverage. Singson opted to use the Rimmel London Kind & Free Moisturizing Skin Tint as part of her routine.

The two products work together to deliver a gorgeous youthful glow while reducing the appearance of skin texture. Remember, you don’t need too much of either product to achieve the glass skin look.

As highlighted in both Collins's and Singson's TikTok videos, the three products come together to make their skin texture disappear. They also leave their faces looking super hydrated and radiant.

Is poreless skin realistic?

Poreless skin plays a key part in maintaining the look of glass skin. Although the desire to achieve poreless skin is part of the latest glass skin beauty trend, is it actually realistic?

"Pores are an important part of our skin structure as they allow substances like oil and sweat to come to the surface of the skin," Dr. Joyce Park, board-certified dermatologist, and creator of TeawithMD tells Yahoo Canada. "We all have them and over time they may become more noticeable."

According to Park, the latest beauty trend is "unrealistic" and something that none of us can actually control, since how pores appear depends largely on genetics and skin type.

"Oilier skin types tend to have more prominent pores. As we age, we also lose structural support in our skin which allows pores to look more enlarged," Park explains. "Other environmental exposures such as UV radiation also contribute to this change."

Even though it's unlikely to achieve poreless skin, Park has some tips for those who want to minimize the look of their pores, like using non-comedogenic makeup and skincare products that won't clog pores, wearing sunscreen and washing and exfoliating your skin regularly.

"Try incorporating the use of a retinoid or retinol nightly, which can also help lessen the appearance of pores," she adds. "But don't beat yourself up if you still see your pores after everything — after all, they serve a purpose and are a natural part of our skin."

Verdict
