Above zero temperatures on the way as extreme cold weather alert ends for Toronto
Toronto Public Health says the extreme cold weather alert issued for the city on Saturday ended as of noon Sunday.
Environment Canada recorded the temperature as -13 C at its observation station at Toronto Pearson early this morning, though it felt more like -18. By midday it was -9 C.
The city's Public Health division issues extreme cold weather alerts when the temperature is expected to reach –15 C or colder or when the windchill is expected to be –20 or colder.
The city division says the alerts activate municipal services intended to keep vulnerable residents inside.
These services include additional shelter beds, distribution of TTC tokens at some drop-in centres, notification of community agencies to ease service restrictions and overnight street outreach.
But come next week, Environment Canada predicts a thawing. The temperature will rise above 0 C Monday and Tuesday but dip to -1 C on Thursday — just in time for the winter solstice.
