An extreme cold weather warning is in effect for northern New Brunswick today.
"Temperatures look to stay in the minus double digits with winds gusting over 40 km/h," said Brennan Allen, a CBC meteorologist.
With the wind chill factor, he said temperatures could feel like –35 C.
"A combination of cold arctic air moving into New Brunswick tonight combined with brisk northwest winds behind a winter storm passing southeast of the Maritimes will give extreme windchill values below –35 C for the northern half of the province early Saturday morning," read a statement issued by Environment Canada.
"Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia," read the statement.
A bit of sunshine and more unseasonably low temperatures are expected throughout the province on Friday.
"Today will be the start of below normal temperatures across the Maritimes that look to persist for the foreseeable future," said Allen.
"Temperatures look to stay in the minus double digits with winds gusting over 40 km/h," he said.
Saturday is expected to remain cold, with the lowest temperatures of the weekend. But sunny skies will shine across most of the province.
