“Extreme Weight Loss” star Brandi Mallory's cause of death revealed
Mallory's death at 40 resulted from "complications of obesity," according to an autopsy report.
Brandi Mallory's official cause of death has been released a month after the Extreme Weight Loss star died at age 40.
Mallory, who appeared on the ABC reality series in 2014, died from "complications of obesity," according to an autopsy report from the Fulton County Medical Examiner obtained by PEOPLE. The document lists the manner of death as "natural."
Although there were trace amounts of alcohol and marijuana in Mallory's system, the autopsy report states that they did not contribute to her death. There was also "no evidence of significant recent injury," and the investigation didn't find any signs of foul play.
Mallory was found dead in her car in in Stone Mountain, Ga., on Nov. 9.
Mallory was featured in the fourth season of Extreme Weight Loss, which followed people who underwent rigorous regimens to lose weight. During her time on the show, Mallory went from 329 pounds to 178 pounds.
In a 2018 interview, she said her weight-loss journey was inspired by the death of a sorority sister. "It was devastating, and she wasn't as large as I was," Mallory said. "She had a heart attack. I literally was waking up every day like… this may be my last day waking up, like, I don't know what's going to happen for me."
In the wake of Mallory's death, Extreme Weight Loss host and trainer Chris Powell remembered her as "an incredible person."
"That girl could dance. And she always brought that energy with everything that we were doing,” Powell added. "She really owned the body positivity movement. It was great because she was very open about her struggles with her weight and everything, but the fact that she would just get out there and she would just fully express herself, you could feel how free she was. And that in turn inspired so many other people to jump on board to accept and embrace and appreciate their bodies."
