Facebook Testing Snapchat-style Disappearing Messages

Facebook is trialling new disappearing messages that self-destruct after one hour, similar to messaging app Snapchat.

The new feature within Facebook’s Messenger app is initially being tested in France.

Tapping on an hourglass icon within the app turns on the feature meaning that any messages sent after that point will self destruct. A second tap turns off the new feature.

“We’re excited to announce the latest in an engaging line of optional product features geared towards making Messenger the best way to communicate with the people that matter most.

“Starting today, we’re conducting a small test in France of a feature that allows people to send messages that disappear an hour after they’re sent. Disappearing messages gives people another fun option to choose from when they communicate on Messenger. We look forward to hearing people’s feedback as they give it a try,” said a Facebook statement.

The company has previously launched a Snapchat competitor called Slingshot, but this time seems to be offering a rival service through its Messenger app.

Facebook reportedly tried to buy Snapchat for $3 billion in 2013, but had the offer refused.

Facebook has said that it may roll out the ‘disappearing messages’ feature to other countries if the tests prove successful.
