Facebook in trouble after whistleblower reveals huge data hack

Revelations by a whistleblower that analytics firm Cambridge Analytica harvested private information from 50 million Facebook profiles to sway voter perceptions has renewed scrutiny into how private information is accessed on the platform and its effects on democratic societies. Further fuelling scrutiny is the fact that both Facebook executives and Cambridge Analytica head Alexander Nix had appeared before parliamentary committees in the U.K. a month before, and painted a very different picture than the one that has emerged in the past couple days.
