Fall legislative session likely extended a few days

The fall session of the Alberta legislative assembly may likely continue past Thursday and into early next week.

Government House Leader Brian Mason plans to consult with his opposition counterpart tonight to see how many amendments they have planned to the remaining bills under consideration.

Wildrose House Leader Nathan Cooper doubts the session will wrap up on Thursday as planned. He said MLAs are still considering several important pieces of legislation.

"There is lots of very important work to be done and we intend to ensure that the voice of Albertans is heard," he said.

MLAs added morning sittings a year ago in an effort to end night sittings and make the legislature more family friendly. That hasn't worked as planned. MLAs are now sitting morning, afternoon and night, particularly in the last few weeks of the fall session.

Thursday marks the 60th day MLAs have sat in the assembly in 2016.

Mason said he has considered increasing the number of sitting days during the year. He plans to talk to his cabinet colleagues about how many bills they plan to introduce next year.

"This is a very active government and there is quite a bit of legislation that we need to consider," he said. "We will certainly be taking a look at that."
