Family Day Activities In Swan Hills

·4 min read

Family day is almost here (Feb. 15), but like so many things over this last year, it will look a little different. Swan Hills community groups have been working hard to meet the challenge of finding and coming up with fun family activities for Family Day that are in line with our current public health orders. They have done a fantastic job of putting together several options. As indoor gatherings are not yet permitted at this stage of Alberta’s reopening strategy, this year’s Family Day events will be either outdoor activities or ones that can be completed home.

Here is a list of the Family Day events in Swan Hills for this year:

Enjoy The Outdoors

· Family Day weekend is a Family Fishing Weekend, meaning that you can try out fishing without having to buy a fishing license from Feb. 13 – 15. Just make sure that you are fishing at a body of water with an open fishing season. Please remember to stay safe on the ice!

· Pull out the sleds and toboggans! We have some great tobogganing hills around town, both smaller hills for the little ones and larger hills for those craving a bit more excitement.

· Have you tried geocaching? This is a great activity that can be fun for the whole family; all you really need is a GPS unit, such as the one on your smartphone. Check out the website for some great information and to create a free account to get you started. There are 22 geocaches around Swan Hills; how many can you find?

FCSS Front Yard Snow Creation Competition

Get started on your front yard snow creation! Build something out of snow in your front yard to enter the competition. You could create a special snowperson, Elsa’s ice castle from Frozen, an igloo, or whatever you would like to build. Use your imagination and have some fun with it. Judging for the competition will start at 3:00 PM on Monday, Feb. 15. First and second place will win a Michaud Toys board game, and third and fourth place will win a Burger Baron gift card.

Winter Story Walk

The Winter Story Walk is a great way to get outside and enjoy a story together as a family while you explore the outdoors. The trail starts at the end of Southview Ave, by the pumpjack. As you continue down the path, you will be able to read and follow along with the story. Follow the trail to see what happens next in the tale.

P.A.W.S. Family Day Stand Out Scavenger Hunt

In an interesting take on the scavenger hunt, P.A.W.S. challenges you to find unique houses in our community. The scavenger hunt form is posted on the FCSS Facebook page; print it out and take a walk or drive around Swan Hills to see if you can find houses that fit the clues on the form. Write down the matching house’s address in the space provided, then take a picture of the completed form and one of your family in front of one of the houses. Post the pictures on the P.A.W.S. Facebook page ( or email them to by midnight on Feb. 15 to be entered into a draw for a chance to win one of three gift certificates to local restaurants.

Create A Family Time Capsule

At almost one year into the current pandemic, we are living through history right now. How about creating a family time capsule? You can print out a copy of “My Time Capsule” from the Swan Hills FCSS website ( or their Facebook page (, or pick up a printed copy in the Town of Swan Hills Office lobby from Feb. 8 - 12 between 9 AM – 12 PM and 1:30 PM - 4 PM. Call Swan Hills FCSS for more information at (780) 333-4119.
