Family homeless after south Ottawa fire destroys home

A south Ottawa family is now homeless after their home was destroyed by fire.

Firefighters, police and paramedics responded to 93 Malhotra Ct., which is off Riverside Drive near Hunt Club Road, at 10:41 p.m. Saturday after 911 calls reported flames shooting from the home.

When crews arrived, heavy smoke and flames were coming from the roof and a more firefighters were called in.

Firefighters entered the home to battle the blaze and they continued to fight the fire until 6 a.m. Sunday, fire officials said.

The home was declared a total loss after suffering about $650,000 worth of damage. Nobody was home at the time of the fire, but the family is now homeless.

A second home also suffered heat damage, but its owners were also away, according to fire officials.

Fire investigators returned to the scene on Sunday morning to continue the investigation. The cause has not yet been determined.
