Volunteers comb Mount Pearl's trails in search of missing man

A group of family, friends, and volunteers spent hours on Monday evening searching Mount Pearl's trail system for a sign of Gerald Anthony, now missing for one week.

The group of about 30 people fanned out across different nature trails, looking in areas where Anthony was known to go for walks.

"We wanted to have people come out and extend the search on either side of the trail. That's what this is all about," said Ken Anthony, Gerald's brother.

The 60-year-old was last seen at his home on Smallwood Drive on the evening of Monday, Aug. 13 when his sister heard him step out of the door and possibly head off for a walk.

Gerald Anthony is described as 5'8", 130 pounds with short hair. He was last seen wearing jeans, brown shoes and a black T-shirt.

Friends and strangers help out

Some searchers, like Noel Mullaly, didn't know Gerald Anthony personally, but felt compelled to lend a hand.

"I do a lot of mountain biking, and walking on those trails, so I hoped I could be some help," he said.

Others, like Linda Wall, are long-time friends.

"We were really good buddies," she said. "He's been on my mind every day. I heard about this search today so I said, 'I'm going to participate.'"

Ken Anthony said he was moved to see such a large group come together to help his family look.

"To take the time and come out and help out and look for a stranger speaks volumes about somebody," he said.

Anthony said he has no choice but to keep looking.

"You have to keep searching. There's no two ways about that," he said. "You've got to stay with your heart and you've got to hope that this is going to be a good news story. We've got to think like that for now."

Health concerns

Gerald Anthony worked as an occasional auto mechanic, and his siblings said he never carries a cell phone, bank cards or ID cards on him.

They're concerned that he may have an undiagnosed medical condition, as he would sometimes become faint and need to rest or be revived.

Anyone who may have information about his whereabouts or video surveillance footage from the Mount Pearl area on Aug. 13 is asked to contact the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.
