'Farming for Love' finale: Jealousy brought Farmer Kirkland, Greg closer in starting a relationship
"I knew that maybe their head wasn't in the right space," Kirkland said about the other daters on the show
After lots of dating, jealousy and farm activities on CTV's Farming for Love Season 2, Farmer Kirkland from Rosedale, B.C., found love with 28-year-old Greg from Toronto. With Greg and Kale the two men left in the finale, Kirkland said he was "really ready" to make his final decision.
"I knew, obviously, I had to break up with Kale at the same time, so I had to go through those emotions," Kirkland told Yahoo Canada. "But then I had Greg waiting for me."
"I'm not going to lie, I was so nervous," Greg added about what it was like from his perspective. "Because throughout the process you really don't know what the other relationships look like."
"Even leading up to that final day, I was so confident and secure in my relationship, but you still have to remind yourself that it could go either way. So I was preparing myself for the worst and also hoping for the best."
'I knew that maybe their head wasn't in the right space'
Out of all the farmers on the season, the jealously between the men vying for Kirkland's affection was particularly evident, even early on in the season. Greg confirmed it did really feel "super intense."
"We obviously all knew what we were signing up for, but I don't think anything can actually prepare you for how real the entire process is and for me, it was really real from day one," he explained.
"There's production, there's so many things happening, so everything's really heightened and I think those feelings of insecurity and jealousy naturally come out. ... My way to navigate that was to just communicate with [Kirkland] and let him know whenever I was having a rough time, and I think everyone had their own way of of dealing with their own jealousy."
Greg, in particular, faced a lot of heat from several of the daters, including Kale and Carson who both told Kirkland that Greg can't manage his emotions.
"In the moment it was actually really shocking for me, to be honest," Greg said. "We spent more time with each other than we got to actually spend with Kirkland, so we would bond and hang out, and then it was really, really strange being on camera and then hearing all these things being said about me."
"Slowly throughout the process it almost just became predictable and I was just always prepared for what they were going to do next or say about me."
But actually, that worked in Greg's favour. Kirkland clued into the fact that while the other daters were using some of their alone time with him to talk about Greg, Greg's focus was always on his personal relationship with Kirkland.
"I knew the jealousy was coming up in a lot of ways and Greg was always focused on our relationship," Kirkland explained. "So when we would have conversations it was much us growing, where we're going and about us. So when people would come to me about someone else, I knew that maybe their head wasn't in the right space."
"I think the biggest tell was maybe with Carson because he did say a bold faced lie to me. So I knew right away. ... It made me realize how far they were willing to go to sort of skew my view of Greg."
Being the queer representation Kirkland, Greg didn't get to see growing up
Previously Kirkland told Yahoo Canada that he feels "honoured" to be the first gay farmer in the Farming for Love franchise. For Greg, being part of this queer representation on TV is something he's also passionate about.
"It's a huge opportunity and I'm really proud of being queer and being the representation in reality TV of gay dating," Greg said. "It's something that I never got to see growing up."
"Even the shower scene from the show, it meant a lot because you don't see that sort of intimacy and affection being broadcast and I think it's super important. It's just really nice to be a part of it all."
The big question for fans of the show is, of course, whether Kirkland and Greg are still together, and that's very much the case with the couple currently together in B.C. But the difficult element of reality TV dating is that they haven't been able to be seen together in public before the finale of Farming for Love aired.
"Having any visits has been very tough, we have got to be isolated, we can't do much," Kirkland said.
"Even me visiting Toronto is challenging. I lived there for a little bit as well a few years ago so I know a lot of people there. Even just being there people are like 'Why are you here?' We went to Mexico though, destination travelling where no one knows us. ... So we're really just looking forward to what our next steps are going to be, but we have to figure that out still."
Kirkland and Greg are set have their "big debut" as a couple during Vancouver Pride this weekend.
