Woman dies in motorcycle crash on Groat Road Bridge

Edmonton police are investigating a fatal collision on the Groat Road Bridge Sunday afternoon that closed northbound traffic lanes for several hours.

One lane was re-opened to traffic at about 7:30 p.m., police said, adding they expected the remaining lanes to be open shortly after.

About 2 p.m., police responded to a single-vehicle collision involving a 53-year-old woman, police said in a press release Sunday evening.

Police said she was riding a Honda Shadow motorcycle northbound when the motorcycle struck a concrete barrier on the bridge.

Emergency responders were on hand but the woman died at the scene.

Speed and alcohol are not believed to have been factors in the collision.

Traffic was being redirected toward the University of Alberta campus.

Groat Road northbound at the bridge will be closed for several hours as police investigate. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.

It was Edmonton's 18th traffic fatality of 2017.
