Fatality in Mumbai building collapse, rescue underway

STORY: Teams of police and members of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rushed to the spot and removed debris as they tried to reach people calling out for help under the rubble.

"We were 12 people in one room. Two have been rescued while 10 are still trapped. My brother and people from my village are still trapped there," said rescued victim, Govind Bharti.

"(The) Naik Nagar Cooperative housing society ... 'D' wing of that building collapsed last night and so far 12 people have been rescued. Unfortunately one has been declared dead. The rest are getting treated in nearby hospitals. There are some more people which (who) are still trapped and attempts are being made to rescue them," Additional Commissioner of Municipal Corporation in Greater Mumbai Ashwini Bhide said.

Though the cause of the collapse has not been determined but officials say the owner was given notice by local government body to get the building renovated.

Building collapses are common in India, as construction is often poor, with builders disregarding regulations and using substandard materials.
