Father and son chase and shoot at two teens riding ATVs, Mississippi police say

Two teenagers came under fire while riding ATVs in Mississippi on Sunday, with bullets flying from a white Chevy truck as it sped along the road after them, WAPT reported.

A father and son were giving chase, shooting, and bumping into the back of one teen’s ATV with their truck as they went, WLBT reported.

Wade Twiner, 48, and Lane Twiner, 22, told police they were trying to apprehend the two teens, who were Black, because they were driving dangerously on their four-wheelers, WAPT reported.

The Yazoo County sheriff said the Twiners own land on both sides of the road where the alleged attack happened and were upset that the teenagers were riding along it, WLBT reported. It’s illegal to ride ATVs on roads, they said.

Both men were arrested at the scene and charged with aggravated assault, WJTV reports.

Neither teenager was injured, but the trauma lingers, one told WLBT. He’s been losing sleep, replaying in his head what happened — a man opening fire from the driver seat, a passenger taking aim from across the roof, the sensation of a pickup ramming him from behind.

County Sheriff Jake Sheriff said he’s looking into possible additional charges, the station reported, as there’s reason to believe race may have played a role in the attack.

“We’re still looking at some things on that to see if we can establish a hate crime or not,” he said. “We’ve got to get with the DA and look at the statutes to say whether that would be a hate crime or not.”
