'I fight for change:' Quotes from the Humboldt bus crash sentencing hearing

Friends and family of victims of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash have delivered the last of their victim impact statements to the semi-trailer driver responsible for the crash.

Earlier in January, Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, 29, pleaded guilty to 16 counts of dangerous driving causing death and 13 counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm in connection with the April 2018 collision.

Sidhu hit the bus — carrying 24 players, team staff, the bus driver and a radio host — after he failed to yield at a stop sign at the intersection of Highways 35 and 335 in Saskatchewan.

More than 90 victim impact statements were either read or presented in provincial court between Jan. 27 and 30 as part of Sidhu’s sentencing hearing.

The sentiments of those affected by the crash ranged from offers to forgive Sidhu and vows not to forgive him, to demands for better training standards for truck drivers across Canada.

Here is some of what the courtroom heard.
