Fight that ended in shooting was 'consensual,' say Windsor police

A fight between two men that ended with one of them suffering a gunshot wound to his hand and abdomen was "consensual," according to Windsor police.

Officers were called to a pharmacy near the corner of George Street and Tecumseh Road about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday for reports of a fight. Police were told one of the people involved may have been shot.

A 35-year-old man was found at the scene with a gunshot wound and transported to hospital, but is expected to survive.

He told police he met another man "by chance" at the pharmacy and they "exchanged words over a longstanding dispute," said Sgt. Steve Betteridge in a media release.

This led to the men fighting outside, where one of the men pulled a gun and shot the other, said police.

A 42-year-old man matching the description of the alleged shooter was found nearby with minor injuries and arrested.

Betteridge said he was carrying a small amount of suspected meth and a knife when he was taken into custody.

Several witnesses reported seeing the suspect throw something into a white truck that drove away before police arrived, added Betteridge.

About half an hour later, officers found a truck matching the description on George Avenue with what appeared to be blood and bullet holes on its exterior.

Police are seeking a warrant to search the truck and the Major Crimes Branch is continuing to investigate.
