Fire burns former Welland automotive plant

Fire crews in Welland, Ont., were battling a stubborn fire Tuesday night in an abandoned automotive plant.

The large blaze, which started late Tuesday afternoon at the former Henniges Automotive plant, forced the Welland fire department to call in crews from nearby St. Catharines to help.

Nearby residents were told to keep their windows and doors closed, and some homes were evacuated as a precaution.

The plant shut down last September and fire officials believe it was empty at the time the fire started.

The building was slated for demolition in two weeks.
