Fire consumes duplex in southeast Edmonton

A woman was hospitalized for smoke inhalation after a duplex fire in southeast Edmonton Sunday night.

One duplex was completely destroyed and a second one was heavily damaged in the fire, said Katie Stewart, a spokesperson for Edmonton Fire Rescue.

The call came in at 10:33 p.m. and eight units were sent to 621 62nd St. SW, Stewart told CBC News Monday.

A duplex was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene in the Charlesworth neighbourhood.

The fire spread causing significant damage to a neighbouring duplex and causing minor damage to the exterior of a third duplex, Stewart said.

The fire was under control by midnight.

There were reports of an explosion as the fire spread but Stewart said the reports have not been confirmed.

A fire investigation will begin once it's safe to get on site, she said.

Crews remained on scene overnight checking for hot spots.
