Fire crews probe propane incident north of Regina

A potentially explosive situation is now under control at a steel plant north of Regina.

Emergency crews responded to a reported propane leak at Evraz Steel, on Armour Road around 10 a.m. CST Thursday.

They were treating the situation as high risk due to potential ignition sources nearby.

According to the fire department, a large propane tank was cracked and it was in a construction zone.

"We're going to continue to keep that safe perimeter and monitor those air levels to make sure that explosive levels are in safe ranges in occupied areas, and allow that tank to vent off," Layne Jackson, from the Regina fire department, said.

The area around the plant was closed off and nearby buildings were evacuated.

Fire officials told CBC News that nobody has been injured.
