Fire crews return to Point Douglas site

Fire and police trucks were parked at 2 Point Douglas Avenue on Sunday afternoon.

Winnipeg firefighters were once again at the site of a major fire at a former paper mill and recycling plant in the city's Point Douglas neighbourhood.

Fire crews were called on Sunday afternoon to 2 Point Douglas Ave., where the original fire had ignited Wednesday night at Gateway Industries.

The original blaze burned for almost 12 hours Wednesday night and Thursday morning and caused at least $1.5 million in damage.

Smoke was visible from the same area on Sunday afternoon, and firefighters were seen with water hoses and other equipment.

As well, Gateway Industries owner Sheldon Blank was seen speaking with police officers.

Winnipeg police confirmed that emergency services crews were at the scene of "a working fire" in the first block of Point Douglas Avenue.

Crews started packing up at the scene shortly after 4:30 p.m.
