Fire at Delta Manor Education Centre damages gymnasium

A fire at a school in Delta has damaged part of a gymnasium.

Delta Fire Battalion Chief Neil Shuster said crews were first alerted to the fire after the fire alarms went off before 4 a.m. Saturday.

"The church is actually used in the gymnasium area here, so [there's] water damage right now and minor fire damage to the one room and the exterior wall," said Shuster.

Fire crews had to enter a small storage area in the back of the gymnasium to get to the fire. Shuster said they put it out quickly after that.

He said the gym is often used by community groups and hosts a church service on the weekends.

"We've got a crew in there doing salvage and overhaul," said Shuster. "Hopefully we can have it ready for Sunday."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
