Fire at St. John's home displaces three, no injuries

St. John's appoints Sherry Colford as city's first female fire chief

Three people are receiving disaster assistance, after being displaced by a fire at their St. John's home Sunday night.

The fire was reported at a home on Cookstown Road around 10:30 p.m.

St. John's Regional Fire Department crews were able to contain the fire, but the kitchen was damaged. There was also smoke damage throughout the two-apartment home.

Platoon Chief Rick Mackey said the fire in the kitchen only took a couple of minutes to douse, and seven vehicles responded.

Two women and a man are staying with family or friends for the time being, and they have received emergency assistance from the Canadian Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

Tenants in another unit, as well as a pet snake and gecko, were forced out due to smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, police say.
