Fire in uptown Saint John causes power, traffic disruptions

An early morning fire at a vacant apartment building in uptown Saint John forced the evacuation of two nearby buildings and knocked out power for about 40 customers in the area.

Shorty before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, people walking by the three-storey brick building at 297 Princess St. smelled smoke and called the fire department.

Eric Garland, platoon chief with the Saint John Fire Department, said about a dozen people were ordered out of neighbouring buildings.

Saint John police have advised motorists to expect traffic disruptions on Princess Street from Pitt to Crown streets in the morning.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
