Fire at Yukon Travel closes Main Street in downtown Whitehorse

A block of Main Street in Whitehorse was briefly closed on Thursday afternoon after a fire broke out in a downtown building.

Officials say employees of Yukon Travel pulled their fire alarm when they smelled smoke coming from the basement.

Fire crews went in and extinguished a "small fire" in the basement, while the employees waited on the sidewalk outside.

No one was injured and the cause of the fire is so far unknown.

"It appears to be some electrical at this time, but until we start doing our investigation and getting our crews in to do that, we won't know exactly," said deputy fire chief Jason Wolsky.

Wolsky also said it's too soon to determine the extent of the damage.
