Firefighters battle huge blaze outside Mississauga paper mill

Firefighters are battling a huge blaze that has been raging for several hours in an industrial area in Mississauga, just north of Pearson International Airport.

The fire broke out near the intersection of Bramalea Road and Drew Road just before 5 p.m. Friday when reams of paper stored in a lot behind the Norampac paper mill caught fire.

The flames were about 15-20 metres high when firefighters arrived, Platoon Chief Daniel Ennamorato of Mississagua Fire and Emergency Services told CBC News.

Fire crews were able to contain the fire in the lot before it could spread to any surrounding buildings, including the paper mill itself, he said.

Ennamorato expects firefighters to continue battling the fire through the night and into Saturday.

Paramedics treated several firefighters on the scene for heat-related injuries, he said. All of those injured are expected to recover.

Ennamorato said temperatures in some of the buildings surrounding the fire soared as high as 200 C. Buildings in the area have been evacuated and area roads are closed, police said.
