Firefighters contain 2-alarm blaze on Gladstone Avenue

Ottawa fire crews successfully brought a two-alarm blaze at a Gladstone Avenue body shop under control Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the fire at Scotty's Auto Body at 758 Gladstone Ave. near Bell Street at around 1:15 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls.

Flames could be seen coming from an exhaust system on the roof of the building, Ottawa Fire Services said. Plumes of smoke rose into the air and could be seen from at least as far away as Highway 417, witnesses said.

Firefighters began an "aggressive offensive attack," removing the body shop's exhaust system to access the fire and keep it from spreading to nearby buildings, the fire department said.

The fire was brought under control by around 1:45 p.m., although crews remained on the roof until after 2 p.m.

No one was injured in the blaze, officials said.

An Ottawa Fire Services investigator remained on the scene Monday afternoon in an attempt to determine the cause of the blaze. No damage estimate has been released.

Gladstone Avenue was closed from Lebreton Street North to Bronson Avenue. Shortly before 3 p.m., Ottawa police announced it had reopened.
