Woodstock Fire Department responded to a call at 167 Connell Street early Thursday afternoon, June 16, and managed to bring the fire under control quickly.
The Woodstock Police and Ambulance N.B. joined the firefighters on the scene, with police and public works vehicles used to reroute traffic around the scene for over an hour.
The fire appeared contained to a back apartment facing Water Street and White Streets. The building is at the corner of Connell and White Streets, carrying traffic up the hill from Water Street.
Woodstock Fire Chief Harold McLellan said the fire was situated in a crawl space under the large wooden structure, which presented “a challenge” for firefighters to reach.
“But the guys did a great job of getting to it and knocking it down,” he said.
McLellan said the fire caused some damage to the structure, but it’s “fixable.”
He said the cause is under investigation, but it is not suspicious.
