First 4/20 rally set for Windsor, but police are watching

Windsor's pot advocates are organizing the city's first 4/20 Fest, a pro cannabis rally celebrated around the world on April 20.

Prominent pot advocate Sam Mellace is scheduled to be a featured speaker at the Windsor rally, according to organizers, who will join other Canadian cities for the first time in the international pro-pot celebration.

Leo Lucier is the leader of the team organizing the local event that promotes the use of medical marijuana and the legalization of cannabis.

"They're massive, peaceful demonstrations to change the rights for cannabis (use)," he said of the 4/20 events. "We're expecting a lot of people."

Windsor police say they will strictly enforce the law during the event, reminding the public marijuana is not legal yet.

"Currently, marijuana possession is against the law. I want to make sure there's no misconception with the public," said Sgt. Steve Betteridge with Windsor police. "The No. 1 priority is public safety."

Lucier expects to have his own security for the event as well. Visitors to the 4/20 Fest must be 18 or older. Admission is a canned or dry good donation to support the region's food banks.
