The First Zola Movie Trailer Is Here, and It’s So Good

The first teaser trailer for the Zola movie is here—and now I need the premiere date to come ASAP.

For the uninitiated, Zola is based on a viral Twitter thread from 2015 by Detroit-based stripper A’ziah “Zola” King. The thread was a whopping 148 tweets and detailed Zola and a girl named Jessica’s wild trip to Florida. Her (true!) story literally had everything you could possibly imagine: Hooters, murder, pimps, someone jumping from a four-story window. And it all started with this ominous message: “Y’all wanna hear a story about why me & this bitch here fell out?” Yes, we do.

And now we’ll get to see it, too—well, a feature adaptation of the events, of course. The Zola movie stars Taylour Paige in the title role and Riley Keough as the Jessica character, though her name is Stefani in the film. Here is an official synopsis, according to IndieWire: “Zola (Taylour Paige) meets Stefani (Riley Keough) at a restaurant where Zola waitresses, and the two immediately click over pole dancing. Only a day after they exchange numbers, Stefani invites Zola on a cross-country road trip, where the goal is to make as much money as possible dancing in Florida strip clubs. Zola agrees, and suddenly she is trapped in the craziest, most unexpected trip of her life.”

The first, neon-soaked trailer for the film is simple and effective. We watch Zola and Stefani apply their makeup as Zola’s voiceover reads that aforementioned, iconic first tweet. Check it out for yourself, below:

Unfortunately we don’t have a release date yet for the Zola movie. All this trailer says is that it’s coming “soon.” Here’s hoping soon means a few months or less, because I’ve never been more hooked on a movie from such a short teaser. Until then, relive the epic original Twitter thread right here.
