Fish kill reported in western P.E.I.

There has been a fish kill near Campbellton in western P.E.I., provincial officials have confirmed.

The fish were discovered Sunday afternoon in a small brook on either side of a bridge on Coughlin Road, and reported to the province by the Roseville-Miminegash watershed group.

Provincial officials responded immediately. Water, soil, vegetation and fish samples have been collected and sent for testing.

The province said 60 brook trout were collected on Sunday, and were relatively small — all less than 23 cm long. Crews continued to work on cleanup on Monday.

Staff from the Forest, Fish and Wildlife division of the Environment Department, the Investigation and Enforcement division of Justice Department, and Environment Canada are investigating the incident.
