Five children - including one 10-year-old - charged in Midlands gun burglary case

Two people were injured in a shooting at a Columbia apartment building, according to the Columbia Police Department.

Five juveniles have been charged in a case in which multiple guns were stolen in the Midlands.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said in a release that the five young people a 10-year-old, two 12-year-olds, a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old — have been charged with first-degree burglary. Their names were not released because of their ages. The suspects were released to their parents, and the cases will be processed by the family court system, the release said.

Deputies responded Oct. 4 to a report of a burglary in the area of Barkley Road in Sumter County. They met with a homeowner, per the release, who said they’d been away from the house for a few hours, and noticed a window had been forced open.

Officers spoke with neighbors who reportedly were able to describe the alleged suspects. A release said deputies also were able to collect evidence to “aid the investigation.”

Investigators recovered some of the weapons, the sheriff’s office said.
