'Fixer Upper' to return with new episodes on Chip and Joanna Gaines' new Magnolia Network

"Fixer Upper" has found a new home on stars Chip and Joanna Gaines' Magnolia Network.

The original series, which aired on HGTV, signed off in 2018 after five seasons. The premiere of its reboot will coincide with the kickoff of the Gaines' channel, also part of Discovery, now planned for next spring.

“The day we wrapped our final episode of ‘Fixer Upper,’ we really believed it was a chapter closed. We knew we needed a break and a moment to catch our breath. But we also knew we weren’t done dreaming about ways to make old things new again,” the renovating duo said in Tuesday's announcement. “These past few years, we’ve continued tackling renovations and projects, doing the work we’re passionate about, but I don't think either of us anticipated how the show would become such a permanent fixture in our hearts. We’ve missed sharing the stories of these families and their homes with you, and we’re excited to do that again very soon!”

In a blog post, Chip elaborated on the show's revival, saying the decision to bring it back was recent.

"I mean it when I say that it wasn’t more than a few weeks ago that we first talked about returning to the show," he wrote in the post. "I mentioned it to Jo, fully expecting her to tell me I was crazy. But instead, in a real sincere way, she told me she’d been missing it too. I get that it all may seem a little impulsive, and that might be true. But the more Jo and I talked it over, the more we began to see it for what it really is: an opportunity to get to share with you some of the projects we care most about.

"This past year, we have poured our hearts into content and programming for Magnolia Network," he said. "Searching for stories we believe the world needs to hear. Stories that bring us together, that let us see things in a whole new light. Stories that connect us to our roots, and to one another. And for Jo and me, it dawned on us that we wanted to be a part of this lineup with a new season of Fixer Upper."

Along with the return of "Fixer Upper," Tuesday's announcement introduced two additional programs joining Magnolia's slate. (The channel will replace DIY.)

In one series, interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn "showcases his eclectic yet distinctive style" when he and his team design "the most breathtaking spaces and tackles decorating projects on any budget or within any scope, all with a dash of humor."

Another program, currently titled “Self Employed,” features entrepreneur Jonathan Morris as he travels across America "meeting some of the country's most inspiring small-business owners."

Joanna's cooking show is among the programs that have already been announced. In late March, she told USA TODAY she had some nerves about the show's debut.

"I’ve never had a cooking show before, so, I get butterflies when I think about it," she said. "I can shoot with my kids in the kitchen when they’re shooting me on their little iPhones, or on my iPhone. It’s a whole other thing when there’s, like, 20 people looking back at you."

Still, Gaines was excited and said her goal isn't "perfection," as she understands it will take some time to acquire the new skill.

"Just like with 'Fixer,' it’s not like (in) the first episode we nailed it. It’s not like the first season we nailed it," she said. "It was this ongoing learning experience, and that’s how I’m going to look at it with the (cooking) show ..."
