Florida Keys highway blocked after sewer line break. Labor Day traffic at standstill
Labor Day traffic in the Florida Keys came to a halt Monday afternoon because of a busted sewer line underneath U.S. 1, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Shortly after 4 p.m., the line broke around mile marker 92 in the Upper Keys area of Tavernier, the sheriff’s office said in an alert.
The pipe sends sewage from the Village of Islamorada to a treatment facility run by the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment District at mile marker 100.3.
U.S. 1 is the only main road that travels through the Florida Keys. Any accident or other incident on the highway snarls traffic throughout the island chain, particularly on busy holidays, like Labor Day weekend.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
