Ford Fireworks do battle with wind, rain

Crowds along the Windsor waterfront scattered for shelter as wind and rain swept in moments before the Ford Fireworks kicked off Monday night.

"Wet," was the first word Lillian French used to describe the light show. "But I thought they were great. I was really glad they didn't cancel them."

Siblings Alisa and Joel Preston took in the show with their family on the fourth floor of the St. Clair Centre for the Arts.

"It felt like they were coming right at my face," said Joel, who stayed out on the balcony, despite the rain.

Heather Greene brought her daughter Sara for her first fireworks show.

"It was less than awesome, but still fun," Heather said about the rain.

There was plenty of hype leading up to the fireworks show. Crowds hit the riverside early to get front-row seats.

Chad Kluke and Veronique Gauthier drove 800 kilometres from Otter Lake, Que., just to make it to Windsor for the big show.

"I was working [here in Windsor] four years ago, and I saw the fireworks," Kluke explained. "I thought I'd show my girlfriend."

Mark Jimenez of Waterford, Mich., has been coming to Windsor to watch the fireworks for at least a decade.

"There's not a lot of places to see it (in Detroit) unless you want to pay a premium." Jimenez said. "(In Windsor) you can sit here in a park, enjoy some nice lunch — and it's safer."
