Forest Lawn death confirmed as Calgary's 21st homicide of the year

Arrest made in Forest Lawn homicide, now confirmed as a shooting

Calgary police are now treating the death of the man whose body was found in Forest Lawn on Wednesday as a homicide.

The victim has been identified as 34-year-old Calgary resident Jonathan Joe Schmeikal.

An autopsy has been completed but police aren't yet revealing his cause of death.

Officers first responded to the 2600 block of 43rd Street S.E. at 5:55 a.m. Wednesday for a check-on-welfare call, and found Schmeikal dead.

Area residents reported hearing shots fired earlier that morning but police say they received no reports of gunfire before discovering the body.

"There is nothing to indicate this was a random incident, however, a specific motive is yet to be determined," police said in a release.

Investigators have no suspects of persons of interest in the case and are asking anyone with information to call police at 403-266-1234 or the Homicide Unit Tip Line at 403-428-8877 or by contacting Crime Stoppers anonymously.

This marks Calgary's 21st homicide of 2015.
